Homecoming 2012 kicks off at 3 p.m.

Four varsity teams will participate in Homecoming 2012 at the Upper School on Saturday, Oct. 27. Most attractions organized by the Harvard-Westlake Parents Association including food, rides and games will open at 3 p.m. and close around 9 p.m..

Wristbands for the event that provide access to all rides, games and most food booths will be sold for $30 and are available for pickup if pre-ordered at the upper level ticket booth. The Student-Athlete Advisory Council also set up a teacher dunk-tank as part of the festivities during the day.

Five former Wolverine athletes and coaches will also be inducted into the Harvard-Westlake Athletic Hall of Fame during halftime of the varsity football game. Bridget Ballard ’06, Meredith Butte ’06, Brian Flacks ’06 and the late volleyball coach Jesse Quiroz will be inducted this year, along with basketball player Ed White ’05, a holdover from last year.

Field hockey will open the festivities with its game against Bonita at 3:15 p.m.. The Wolverines, who stand at 13-1-2 overall and 6-0-1 in league, clinched a Mission League championship earlier this week by tying Glendora. They can finish their season in league undefeated with another win over Bonita. The Wolverines beat Bonita earlier this year by a score of 4-0.

The boys’ water polo team will have its Homecoming debut in the Copses Family Pool after playing a de facto Homecoming game off campus last year while the pool was under construction. The field hockey team, girls’ volleyball team and football team will also be on display for Wolverine fans.

The boys’ water polo team’s match against Murrieta Valley will follow at 4:30 p.m.. Murrieta Valley does not play in the Mission League and only has played one mutual opponent of the Wolverines so far this season — Damien defeated Murrieta Valley 10-6 and the Wolverines defeated Damien 10-3. A win would boost the Wolverines’ chances of getting a higher seed in CIF playoffs. The Wolverines stand at 16-8 overall and 2-1 in league.

Girls’ volleyball will play league rival Notre Dame at 5:30 p.m.. The Wolverines are 21-9 overall and 6-2 in league, with one of their losses coming against Notre Dame earlier this season in three straight sets. An upset over Notre Dame would help the Wolverines earn a good seed in playoffs.

Finally, the varsity football game against Cathedral at 7:30 p.m. will give the Wolverines a chance to clinch a playoff spot for the first time since 2009, when they were members of the Del Rey League. The Wolverines stand at 6-2 overall and 2-1 in league play, and Head Coach Scot Ruggles said that a third win against a league opponent would essentially guarantee that the Wolverines finish high enough in Mission League standings to earn a spot in playoffs. The Wolverines beat Cathedral last year by a score of 34-26.
