Boys’ basketball to close season against Loyola

After falling to St. Francis 65-55 on Feb. 1, the varsity boys’ basketball team will face arch-rival Loyola tonight in its last game of the regular season and the teams’ fourth meeting of the 2012-2013 campaign.

The Wolverines have been without top scorer Derick Newton ’14, who suffered a shoulder injury against Chaminade on Jan. 9., for the past nine games, and second highest scorer Mike Sheng ’14 for the past three games after suffering a hamstring injury against Serra on Jan. 26.

The team is 2-1 against Loyola this season, defeating the Cubs 61-59 in the rivals’ last matchup on Jan. 16. The Cubs’ leading scorer Parker Jackson-Cartwright missed the last meeting with a sprained ankle, but is set to play tonight at Occidental College.

The Wolverines will look for momentum as they head into the postseason, and will look for players like Francis Hyde ’13 and Alex Copeland ’15, who were first and second in scoring respectively against St. Francis, to step up in the rivalry game tonight at Occidental College.
