Boys’ basketball ends season with double overtime loss to Loyola

In its fourth game against arch-rival Loyola and final game of the regular season, the boys’ varsity basketball team lost to the Cubs 56-52 in a double overtime thriller on Monday.

The Wolverines took the lead early in the game but the Cubs went ahead in the second quarter and kept a strong grasp on it.

With five seconds remaining in the fourth quarter Mike Sheng ’14, who returned from a hamstring injury Monday, drove in and dumped the ball off to Dave Winfield ’13 for a layup to tie the game at 44 and send it into overtime. The duo replicated the play in the first overtime period to tie the game at 50 and send it into the second overtime.

A Winfield jumpshot from the low block put the Wolverines ahead at one point, but the Cubs would not let up. A three pointer from Loyola’s Parker Jackson-Cartwright put the Cubs ahead late in the second overtime period, and the Cubs would hold on to that lead until the end.

With the loss, the Wolverines end up splitting the season series 2-2 with the Cubs, and finish the regular season with a record of 15-10 and a league record of 6-6. The team finishes fourth in the Mission League and will look ahead to CIF playoffs, which begin on Feb. 14.
