Undefeated water polo team wins 2nd straight CIF Championship

The Wolverines cemented their status as number one water polo team in the nation today, taking down the Mater Dei Monarchs 10-7 in the finals of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 Championship to win their second championship in two years. The win makes their seasonal record 29-0, the Wolverines’ first undefeated seasonal record in school history.

The Monarchs struck first with a goal early in the first quarter, but the Wolverines were quick to retaliate and center Ben Hallock ’16 skipped the ball into the goal. A bar-in from the Monarchs made the score 2-1 but the score was tied up again by the end of the first quarter. The first half ended with Harvard-Westlake up 6-4. Quality production from underclassmen in the second half unseated Mater Dei’s momentum, and the Wolverines broke away in the third quarter.

Hallock was named MVP, and recorded four goals. Goalie Anthony Ridgley ’15 recorded nine saves and attacker Evan Rosenfeld ’17 added two goals.

This is the the second straight title and fifth consecutive victory against Mater Dei for Harvard-Westlake boys’ water polo and the third CIF title for Head Coach Brian Flacks ’06. Last year they also faced Mater Dei in the finals, and beat them 9-6.
