Varsity baseball team raises over $11,000, shaves heads to promote fight against pediatric cancer

After raising more than twice their fundraising target, members of the varsity baseball team shaved their heads in between games at O’Malley Field on Feb. 16 to promote the fight against pediatric cancer in honor of Chris “Beebop” Robinson ’13, who died of leukemia in November 2011.

The team aimed to raise at least $5,000 by Saturday’s games and emerged more than $6,000 over their goal.

The team has been collecting donations through a website and also sold wristbands Feb. 14-16 on the quad.

Wristband sales alone totaled $4317. The outside of the orange wristband says “strikeout leukemia” while the inside commemorates Robinson with his name. Each wristband was sold for $5.

The team is still keeping the last possible date for donations open until April 1.

The team is raising money for the Vs. Cancer foundation. For every dollar they raise, 50 percent will go to the Mattel Children’s Hospital at UCLA, and the other 50 percent will go to national cancer research.

Baseball coach Matt LaCour introduced the idea to varsity player Austin Schoff ’13 at the beginning of the season.

Schoff started working with Vs. Cancer foundation head Chase Jones, a former Stage IV brain cancer patient and University of North Carolina baseball player, to plan the fundraiser. On Jan. 23, the two opened the online fundraising page.

“During his battle [Chris] showed incredible fortitude,” Schoff said. “My goal with this fundraiser is not only to reach our goal, but to spread awareness and make sure nobody has to go through the fight that Chris went through for two years.”
