Students promote Freedom School bake sale at assembly (video)

Freedom School student volunteers made a presentation about the summer program, where they give academic help to underprivileged children, and announced a fundraising bake sale at Wednesday’s assembly.

Volunteers Jed Kronenberg ’17, Shelby Weiss ’16 and Cate Wolfen ’17 individually started book clubs for Freedom School students, and held a bake sale on the quad to raise funds for books, food, and other supplies.

“The kids are really hardworking and getting to help them grow and help them learn is a really meaningful experience,” Kronenberg said.

The Jazz Singers sang two a capella Christmas carols to promote their upcoming Winter Choir Concert, which will take place on Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church in Santa Monica.

Students, who had previously gone on the school’s Spring Break trip to Spain, presented this year’s Spanish-immersion trip, sharing their experiences and encouraging student to sign up.

Stone Cutters editors introduced their new website, and announced that they are accepting submissions for their upcoming issue.

Rian Ratnavale ’17 spoke during the On My Mind portion of the assembly about how being on the staff of the Chronicle has made him realize the importance of friendship, and urged students to remember the value of friends during stressful times.

The comedic improv group Scene Monkeys shared a promotional video to encourage students to attend their auditions, which will take place this Friday.

Students organizers of the second-ever poetry festival “Wider than the Sky” announced that they will be holding a contest to design a new logo for the event, and the student heads of the school’s film festival screened a video announcing the new name of the Harvard-Westlake Film Festival, “Westflix.”

Members of the Student Athletic Advisory Committee named tennis player Julianna Simon ’16 and water polo player Ben Hallock ’16 the November athletes of the month.
