The BLACC will screen the satirical film “Dear White People,” which focuses on a group of four black students attending a primarily white college, from 2 – 5 p.m. Feb. 21 at the Ahmanson Lecture Hall. Lena Waithe, who produced the film, attended the screening.
The film follows Sam White (Tessa Thompson) who causes conflict among the school with her radio talk show “Dear White People,” Troy Fairbanks (Brandon P. Bell) the son of the school’s dean and Sam’s ex-boyfriend, Lionel Higgins (Tyler James Williams) a writer for the school’s newspaper and Coco Conners (Teyonah Parris) who competes with Sam for a reality TV show.
“We just thought that the movie was an important concept for people to see so we brought it here,” BLACC member Nina Milligan ’16 said.
The film is rated R and director Justin Simien won the Sundance Film Festival Jury Award for Breakthrough Talent last year.
