    Girls drive to 7-win start

The girls’ varsity golf team’s only obstacles going into the Mission League team tournament on Oct. 24 are Chaminade next Tuesday and Notre Dame on Oct. 19. The team has a 7-1 record.

Notre Dame handed the team its only loss this season on Oct. 3 and beat Harvard-Westlake by a convincing 26 strokes.

“Our team is capable of playing at their level but unfortunately we were mentally psyched out by Notre Dame’s reputation and ability,” Head Coach Megan Phillips said. “We absolutely rebounded from the loss.” The team went on to win their next two games against Flintridge Sacred Heart and Alemany.

Winning the Mission League will help seal the team’s league championship run. The number one and two teams playing in the Mission League are invited to compete in the first round of CIF competition.

The team is led by team captain Ally Young ’07, and Charlotte Abrams ’09 and Tiffany Yang ’10 vie for positions two and three. Nicole Scher ’07, Mary Ann Toman-Miller ’10 and Jamie Kim ’10 typically complete the starting order.

Young said she was nervous about the final match against Notre Dame because “I need to say the right things to my teammates to inspire the team,” she said.
