Eleven students qualified for the American Invitational Mathematics Examination last month by scoring in the top five percent on the AMC 12. The optional examination is administered to students in advanced level mathematics courses.
Math teacher and AMC 12 proctor Kevin Weis believes that two factors, increased difficulty of the test and the scoring system changes it underwent this past year, affected the number of students who qualified for the AIME.
Thirty-eight students qualified in 2006. In past years, over half of the students participating in the examination qualified to the next round.
âMost of our students had figured out the exact number you needed to get right and skip in order to score over a 100 and qualify,â Weis said. Scoring system changes gave fewer points for skipping questions, which brought down the total point scale.
