Cabaret to feature Broadway songs, rock opera

This year’s “Not Quite Cabaret” will feature songs from American composers as well as musical numbers from “The Wiz” next Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. in Rugby. The first half of the show will feature Bel Canto and the Chamber Singers in a more typical concert setting, while the second half will feature rock songs and musical numbers.

Bel Canto will sing hymns like “Ave Regina” and more classical-leaning pieces, including some in German. Chamber Singers will perform more American-themed music like “Shenandoah,” arranged by Mack Wilberg, and “O, Susana,” an all-male number arranged by Jonathan Crutchfield.

The second half of the concert will feature songs from Broadway musicals like “Seasons of Love” from “Rent” and “Ease on Down the Road” from “The Wiz.”

Additionally, the choirs will be singing a choral rendition of “Pinball Wizard” from the Who’s seminal rock opera “Tommy.”

“Pinball Wizard is one of the greatest rock songs of all time, and to be doing it at my final choral concert is amazing!” Ryan Martin-Patterson, a bass in Chamber Singers, said.
