Wolverines participate in Maccabi games

Alex Fullman ’09 won four gold medals and one silver medal in swimming events, and Nicole Sneider ’09 carried the Mexican national soccer team to a bronze medal at the Pan American Maccabi Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina over winter break. School trainer Milo Sini and freshman volleyball coach Jon Aharoni participated in the games as well.

Fullman swam breast, freestyle and butterfly strokes, as well as two medleys. He chose to compete in the games because he wanted to meet other Jewish athletes from all corners of the world, he said.

“It’s moving to see so many Jews come together to compete,” Fullman said.

Sneider, a first generation American with Mexican parents, stumbled across the opportunity after the head of the Mexican delegation to the games approached her about playing soccer for the Mexican national team. Sneider led the team in goals during the games, and her team captured third place with a win over the Venezuela national team.

“I thought it would be cool to play for another country and experience another culture,” she said. “I could have played for the US, but I was going for more than just soccer.”
