8 track and field athletes advance to CIF Finals

Eight members of the track and field team qualified in 12 CIF Finals  events at the CIF Preliminaries at Estancia High School last Saturday. CIF Finals will be held May 21 and those who place high in events will qualify for CIF Masters May 27.

Although he didn’t qualify for CIF Finals, Drew Tuttle ’11 captured his first school record of the season, as well as the boys’ team’s first of the season, in high jump. Tuttle reached a height of 6’1”, the second highest at CIF Prelims. Ben Gaylord ’13 continued a run of good form in pole vault after breaking a personal record at the Mission League Finals May 5. Gaylord qualified for CIF Finals by tying for fourth in the event. David Manahan ’14 also qualified for CIF Finals. In the 800-meter event, Manahan placed ninth, the last place that qualified.

The members of the nation-leading girls’ sprint medley and distance medley relays all qualified for CIF Finals in multiple events. Cami Chapus ’12 and Lauren Hansson ’11 both qualified for four events. Chapus won the 1600-m and 3200-m events, both of which Chapus holds the school records for. Also in the 1600-m event, Lizzy Thomas ’14 took 18th place. Chapus also qualified for the 800-m event, in which she placed seventh, and for the 4×400-m relay, in which she placed second with teammates KC Cord ’11, Hansson, and Amy Weissenbach ’12.

Besides the 4×400-m relay, Hansson qualified for CIF Finals through two fourth place finishes in the 200-m and 400-m events, both of which Hansson holds the school records for. Hansson also qualified in the 4×100-m relay with teammates Cord, Hilary King ’11, and Maddy Morency ’12. The team placed ninth, the last place that qualified.

Weissenbach qualified for CIF Finals in three events. In addition to the 4×400-m relay, Weissenbach finished second in the 1600-m and 800-m events, the latter of which she holds the school record for. King also qualified for three events: the 4×100-m relay, the 100-m event, and long jump; all of which she holds school records for. KC Cord qualified twice for the CIF Finals, in the two aforementioned relays.

On the field, Arielle Winfield ’13 tied for 10th and 17th in the high jump and triple jump events, respectively. Efe Agege ’14 placed 13th in the triple jump event. Elena Crowe ’12 tied for 16th with two others in the pole vault event. Abbie Neufeld ’12 took 25th place in discus.

CIF Finals and CIF Masters will be held at Cerritos College.
