Chess Club holds afterschool tournament

By Saj Sri-Kumar

The Chess Club hosted an intramural chess tournament Friday afternoon.

The tournament was intended to include students from North Hollywood High School. However, North Hollywood pulled out of the tournament, citing scheduling conflicts. Organizers Rishi Bagrodia ’12 and Cheston Gunawan ’12 decided to hold the tournament anyway among students just from Harvard-Westlake.

The club first held a chess tournament last year, which included students from North Hollywood.

“We thought it was a great way for students to get together to play chess, and to play competitively,” Bagrodia said.

Bagrodia said that he and Gunawan decided to hold the tournament despite North Hollywood’s absence, as it would still allow students to experience the competitive chess environment. Overall, around 30 students were present.

James Zhang ’12 placed first in the tournament, with four wins and one draw.

In addition to the chess games, students were able to play videogames on a Wii console.
