Cancer Society to remember Chris Robinson ’13 with walk-a-thon

By Michael Sugerman

Chris Robinson’s family, along with his former baseball teammates Austin Schoff ’13 and Aaron Lyons ’13, organized a walk-a-thon in Robinson’s honor in partnership with Community Council. The American Cancer Society sponsored the event, held on Saturday, June 23 on the Juniors Field at Ladera Little League.

Robinson was diagnosed with leukemia as a ninth grader, months into his first year at Harvard-Westlake in 2009. He died last November after battling the disease for two and a half years.

Before Saturday’s event, students were able to join “Team Beebop” on the American Cancer Society website and make donations to the national organization.

“I met Chris before I came into ninth grade and we became friends pretty quickly,” Schoff said. “Chris was a great friend of mine and his family really reached out to me, and so this seemed like an important way to help them out.”

The walk-a-thon started at 9 a.m. and ended 24 hours later. Participants walked laps around the baseball diamond: the first lap was a special “survivor lap” for cancer survivors who attended the walkathon. Attendees also had the option to play a variety of games including croquet, ping-pong and volleyball.
