Chapus finishes 9th in Junior Championship 1500-meter final

By Michael Aronson

Coming off a victory in the mile event at the Adidas Grand Prix track meet in New York earlier this June, Cami Chapus ’12 finished 9th in the 1500-meter race Sunday at the US Junior National Championships in Bloomington, IN with a time of 4:32.92.

Chapus finished 4th out of 23 runners in the preliminary qualifying race Friday with a time of 4:28.62 to qualify for Sunday’s final race.

Heading into Sunday’s race, Chapus was ranked 2nd in the 1500 for American junior runners behind top ranked Mary Cain. The two, deemed “middle-distance queens” by ESPN High School, had never faced each other on the track. Cain won the race with a time of 4:14.74, setting a meet record in the event.

Chapus also fell to competitor Nikki Hiltz who defeated Chapus in the state championship earlier this year in the 1600-meter race.
