Alum Ballard named top female athlete at Brown

    By Austin Lee

Bridget Ballard ’06 was awarded the Marjorie Brown Smith award for her performances on Brown University’s soccer and swim teams.

Ballard, who was on Harvard-Westlake’s cross country, soccer, swim and track and field teams, is co-captain on Brown’s soccer team, having played in every minute of every game this year and competes in freestyle and backstroke on the swim team.

Along with the Marjorie Brown Smith award, which is given to the most outstanding female varsity athlete in Brown each year, Ballard also received All-Ivy recognition this year, the third in her career and made the Academic All-Ivy list for the second time. In addition, she was named CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine First Team Academic All-District in women’s soccer.

For her performances in swimming, Ballard was the co-recipient of the Martha Joukowsky Scholar-Athlete Award for her performance in the pool and as a student.

Darlene Bible, who coached Ballard during her swimming career here, called her the best athelete she has ever coached at Harvard-Westlake.

“The only other girl I have coached as talented athletically was Dara Torres,” she said.

“She had an amazing blend of size, speed, technical ability and intelligence,” said girls’ soccer coach Richard Simms. “She was a tremendous leader and just a great person.”
