    Alum replaces technical director

Josh Levy ’99 replaced Adam Howarth as performing arts department technical director after Howarth left in mid-January.

“It was a job I had been interested in ever since I was here [as a student],” Levy said.

As a student at Harvard-Westlake, Levy was already interested in the art of theatrical design and studied lighting and sound. He first began to design and learn about technical theater during performances in the Marshall Center at the Middle School.

He went on to study at UCLA, earning a bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences and a Master’s degree in Fine Arts.

Before taking the job at his alma mater, he worked as a freelance sound designer and worked on productions such as Cirque du Soleil’s “Love.”

Along with everyday jobs such as supervising and monitoring light and sound for assemblies, theater productions and music and dance shows, Levy also works with students who aspire to learn more about sound and light design.

“My favorite part of the job is getting to work with the students and hopefully helping them to learn the stuff I would have wanted to learn in high school,” Levy said. “I help teach them different concepts behind sound and lighting design.”

After an eight year gap since his graduation, Levy returned to find many advancements in the stage design department.

“The theater sound system is very impressive,” Levy said. “I look forward to improving it even more.”
