20 acts perform in first Coffee House of the year

Musical acts ranging from pop medleys to originally written songs dominated Prefect Council’s Coffee House on Monday, Nov. 12.

Students gathered in the lounge to enjoy ice-blended coffees, cookies and their peers’ performances for the first Coffee House of the year. Prefect Council is planning at least three other shows, Head Prefect Michael Wagmeister ’13 said.

“We had a packed show, and unfortunately we had to end it before a few other people who signed up ‘open mic’ could perform,” Junior Prefect Henry Hahn ’14 said. “Overall, it seemed like the audience really enjoyed the entire event.”

With the exception of a slam poetry recital by Cory Batchler ’13 and an improvised electronic performance by Sam Wolk ’13, the Coffee House included 18 musical acts.

Megan Ward ’13 and Rebecca Aaron ’13 arranged and sang a medley of songs from Taylor Swift’s newest album, “Red,” in their second time performing at a Coffee House event.

“Coffee House is great because the environment is so welcoming,” Ward said. “Everyone is there to support their classmates and have a nice afternoon. There isn’t a lot of pressure, we just get up and have fun doing what we love.”

First time event-goer Ali Bloomgarden ’13 reflected Ward’s sentiments of general enthusiasm from the student body.

“I love how people are willing to showcase something they’re passionate about, to be daring enough to go out there and share something personal with their peers,” she said.
