Baseball defeats Loyola in series opener

By Judd Liebman

After splitting the Chaminade series, the boys’ baseball team defeated Loyola 6-3 to open its second to last series of the year.

Behind Lucas Giolito’s ’12 two-run six innings on 96 pitches, the Wolverines defeated the Mission League opponent to improve to 7-2 in league.
“Like [Head] Coach [Matt] LaCour told us, to win at Loyola is tough, and after this game, we have a ton of confidence going in to the homestretch,” Giolito said.
Giolito started and gave up a run in both the first and sixth innings, pitcher Brandon Deere ’12 said. After Giolito held the Cubs’ offense to only four hits, closer Connor Dillman ’11 gave up a run, two hits and a walk to close the game out, Deere said.

“I have to give it up to my defense behind me,” Giolito said. “They got the ground-balls and got the outs and stopped a lot of damage that could have happened.”

The Wolverines finish the Loyola series on Friday at home.

Earlier in the day, the JV team defeated the Cubs 3-2 in extra-innings on a Daniel Davila ’14 walk-off single, pitcher Alex Rand-Lewis ’12 said. With this win, the JV squad improved its record to 6-3 in league.
