Basketball falls to Sierra Canyon in CIF Open Division State Playoffs

The boys’ basketball team lost to Sierra Canyon High School 75-65 tonight in the regional semifinals of the CIF Open Division State Playoffs,  marking the end of the Wolverines’ season.  It was a packed house at Pepperdine University, as the 3,000 seat stadium was sold out, and featured fans such as Lakers point guard Lebron James and rapper Drake.

Sierra Canyon led for most of the night, though the Wolverines did manage to keep it within reach. After a three from small forward Brase Dottin ’20 with 6:28 remaining, the lead was down to 53-50 in favor of the Trailblazers, who promptly went on a 15-4 run to ice the game. The teams would exchange baskets for the rest of the game, though the Wolverines couldn’t complete the comeback.

After the game, coach David Rebibo said he felt so much pride in the performance of his team.

“I was so proud of them,” Rebibo said. “They battled, they competed and I think we played the best team in the state and I couldn’t be more proud of [our] effort, determination and beleif. [I’m] proud of our seniors, who stepped up and were huge. I’m proud of our character and what we built and we’ll continue to try and build. It’s special.”

Many of the seniors were emotional after tonights game, their last for the Wolverines. Point guard Spencer Hubbard ’20, fighting through tears, explained just how meaningful his time on this team has been for him. He said that no matter what was happening outside of basketball, he had a family to come back to no matter what, and that meant the most to him.

The Wolverines were led in scoring by Dottin and Center Mason Hooks ’20, who each had 18 points. The team finished the year with a 25-7 overall record.
