    Boys soccer eliminated from CIF

After a fairy tale season and 120 minutes of play in their CIF quarterfinal match, the boys’ soccer team finally crumbled last Friday against Millikan of Long Beach. For the second straight match, the boys’ soccer team took a higher ranked team to penalty kicks, but this time they could not pull off the upset in the CIF quarterfinals, as the Rams defeated the Wolverines 2-2, 4-1 in penalty kicks.

The Wolverines jumped out to an early lead after Thomas McAndrews ’07 scored in the first half. The Rams failed to capitalize on a number of opportunities as the Wolverines defense held late into the second half. Yet with five minutes remaining, the Rams were able to tie the score at 1-1 and send the game to overtime.

Early in the second half of the first overtime, the Rams scored to take a 2-1 lead, but the Wolverines tied the score at 2-2 before time expired with a goal by Anthony Farias-Eisner ’09.

The sudden death overtime period went scoreless, thus forcing the game into penalty kicks. In their previous match, the Wolverines defeated Royal 3-1 in penalty kicks, but this time, the Wolverines weren’t as successful.

After Millikan converted their first kick, Thomas McAndrews ’07 missed his kick wide left and the Wolverines found themselves down 1-0. Millikan made their next three kicks sealing a victory, while the Wolverines only made one, scored by Charlie Hartwick ’08.
