Boys’ soccer knocked out by top-seed in 2nd round

Despite a late goal off a free kick from Ty Gilhuly ’13 to tie the game, the boys’ soccer team was unable to hold off San Clemente, the top seed in the Southern Section of Division I, in the second round of CIF playoffs tonight.
Lucas Bongarra’s first campaign as the head coach of the boys’ soccer team came to an end after the 2-1 loss. After Akosa Ibekwe ’13 was sent off with a red card in the first half, the Wolverines were forced to play with ten men the remainder of the game. Though goal keeper Sam Clement ’14 shut out San Clemente in the first half and Gilhuly was able to answer after San Clemente’s first goal, the Wolverines could not match the top-ranked Tritons after their second goal in the second half.
An upset win would have sent the Wolverines to the quarterfinals of CIF playoffs, but last week’s victory over Dana Hills in the first round marked an improvement for the team that was knocked out of the first round of playoffs in 2012. The Wolverines end the season 10-11-2 overall, including a 6-4-2 record in Mission League play good enough for second place behind 12-0-0 Loyola.
