Boys’ tennis falls in CIF quarterfinals

The boys’ varsity tennis team was eliminated from the playoffs yesterday, losing 10-8 to Peninsula in the quarterfinals. Playing before a large crowd of Wolverine fans on its home court, the team lost the first round 4-2, getting swept in doubles play. The first round was reminiscent of last year’s season-ending loss, also to Peninsula, in which the Wolverines were swept 9-0 in doubles.

“It was a matter of a pride. We weren’t going to get swept again in doubles,” team captain Mark Seraydarian said.

In the second round, the Wolverines turned things around, winning two out of three in doubles. Going into the third round, the team was down 7-5.

“We knew we had to get at least four more sets to even give us a chance at a win,” Seraydarian said. The Wolverines won three sets in the third round, but it wasn’t enough for a victory.

The fifth-seeded Wolverines entered the match as underdogs, as they had lost to fourth-seeded Peninsula in April.

In singles play, Ryan Thacher ’08 swept his three sets, and Matt Wagner ’11 and Garreth Anwar ’08 each won one set. In doubles play, Chris Kenney ’10 and Seraydarian won two sets. Andrew Smith ’08 and Alex Wittenberg ’08 won one.
