Boys’ tennis to face challenge in CIF quarterfinals

By Austin Lee

After advancing through the first two rounds of CIF playoffs, the boys’ tennis team will play a quarterfinal match against Corona Del Mar Tuesday.

The team defeated Trabuco Hills 14-4 last Wednesday in the first round of CIF and continued on to defeat Calabasas 15-3 two days later in the second round.

In the match against Calabasas, the team lost two sets in the first round, leading 4-2, but gained a solid lead in the second round, extending its lead by six sets to 10-2. The Wolverines finished the third round by winning five of six sets.

“I liked the way our guys stayed tough through the round of matches against Calabasas on Friday,” Head Coach Chris Simpson said. “We had to be cautious not to be overconfident and we did just that.”

The Wolverines will be facing a tough opponent in the quarterfinals. They will have to perform well against the powerful doubles force of Corona Del Mar and take as many singles sets as possible in order to win.

“It will be a battle and their doubles are tough so we hope to be focused all three rounds and take as many in singles,” Simpson said. “They are the favorites to win, but our home record has been excellent this season.”

The school will also be represented in the CIF Individuals by the doubles pair of Jeffrey Bu ’12 and Harrison Kalt ’14, who will be playing in the CIF Individual Sectionals this Friday.
