Boys’ volleyball narrowly misses upset of Loyola

By David Gobel

Boys’ volleyball almost pulled off a stunning upset of rival Loyola Tuesday night at Taper Gym. Led by a dominant performance from hitter Damiene Cain ’11, the Wolverines were ultimately defeated 3-2 by Loyola, which is ranked 3rd in CIF Division I.

The Wolverines eked out the first game of the match 25-23, but lost the second game 23-25. In the second game the team lost a crucial point at the end that was disputed by Wolverine players, who argued that a ball ruled out by the referees hit the line.

The Wolverines won the third game 25-20. In the fourth game, although Loyola obtained a 16-9 lead, the Wolverines fought back and went up 23-22. However, Loyola won  the game 25-23 to force a fifth game. The Wolverines dropped the last game 8-15.

The loss against Loyola brings the Wolverines’ record to 7-12. They will play Crespi at home Thursday.
