Boys’ Water Polo defeated St. Francis High School 21-1 today in its opening game of the season.

Players said that the game allowed underclassmen to develop their skills and become more experienced.

“It’s good knowing that you’ll have more guys to turn to if we need them later on in the year,” goalkeeper Asher Schwartz ’21 said. “Mission League games are a great chance for our younger players to develop their game.”

After Alemany High School forfeited Aug 30 and the Wolverines received the win, the St. Francis game became both the first game of the season.

The squad opened the game strong, finishing the first quarter up 6-0 and eventually leading 13-0 at halftime.

The team maintained its dominant performance, outscoring the Golden Knights in the second half by a score of 8-1.

“The games allow us to work on the skills we have been practicing and also allow everyone on the team to get a chance to play,” attacker Shay Gillearn ’21 said.

The currently 2-0 overall Wolverines will host league opponent Crespi High School on Sept. 6. Schwartz hopes to build off the recent success for the rest of the season.

“Our goal is to win Mission League in a dominating fashion and also use the matches as preparation for high level CIF opponents,” Schwartz said.
