Students, faculty and parents flooded Facebook with tributes to Justin Carr ’14, who died Friday afternoon, remembering him as a smiling friend who could always make them laugh and as a classmate who gave his all whether at early morning practices or on stage performing.

Carr was taken by ambulance to Sherman Oaks Hospital after he apparently lost consciousness in the pool during swimming practice. Carr was pulled from the pool and efforts to resuscitate him at poolside were unsuccessful.

In an emailed letter to students, Head of School Jeanne Huybrechts described Carr as “a caring friend to many, great company and fun to be around.”  Earlier in the evening, she wrote to parents that Carr was “scholar, athlete, singer, actor, ebullient child,” and “an extraordinary young man by any measure.” Huybrechts taught Carr Algebra II during his sophomore year.

Carr was set to perform at the Dance Concert next week, planned to go to Europe with the Chamber Singers during Spring Break, and introduced actor Samuel L. Jackson at the Black History Assembly earlier this month as a leader of the Black Leadership Awareness and Culture Club.

All-school assemblies will be held at both campuses 8 a.m. Monday in Carr’s memory.

Deans, school counselors, and  Peer Support Leaders will be available on campus all week. Huybrechts said students should feel free to contact their deans over the weekend either by email or their phone numbers in the Red Book.
