Defense keys boys’ soccer in tie against Loyola

By David Gobel

A hard-fought 1-1 tie at home against Loyola capped off a week of mixed results for the boys’ soccer team on Friday. Loyola scored in stoppage time to ruin Wolverine hopes of a win.

The previous Friday, the Wolverines faced Notre Dame in an away game, and managed to win handily 4-1. They then proceeded to play two home games, tying Crespi 1-1 on Monday and losing 2-0 to Chaminade on Wednesday.

The Wolverines have a league record of 1-2-2.

The biggest game of the week was against rival Loyola, who came into the game with an undefeated league record and an 11-2-6 record overall. The first half the game remained very close due to a strong performance by backup goalie Wade Clement ’12, who filled in for an injured Wiley Webb ’12.

Forward Robin Chon ’11 had an opportunity for a goal near the end of the half, but the shot was blocked by the Loyola goalie and the Wolverines entered halftime with the game in a scoreless tie.

In the beginning of the second half, the Wolverines had a goal headed in by Alex Siegel ’11 that was taken back by an offsides penalty. However, the team’s luck would change when midway through the second half Lukas Czinger ’12 took a shot that was deflected by the Loyola goalie and put back in by forward Jack Temko ’14.

After the goal, Loyola’s numerous attempts to score were thwarted by Clement and the Wolverine defense. It seemed as the Wolverines would emerge victorious, but Loyola managed to score a goal off a cross in stoppage time. Loyola came very close to scoring another goal, but Clement made another acrobatic save to keep the game at a 1-1 draw.

The 6-8-3 Wolverines will face Alemany Jan. 22 in their next game.
