Field hockey advances to semifinal

By Robbie Loeb

After beating Edison 3-1 in the first round of the CIF playoffs on Oct. 31, the field hockey team will advance to the semifinal round on Nov. 2. They will play Huntington Beach, who they lost to on Sept. 20, 1-3.

“In order to win in playoffs, we are going to have to play as a team,” head coach Erin Creznic said. “We will need to be using both sides of the field and be moving up and down the field as a team with all of our midfielders and forwards dropping back to play smart defense.”

Nine out of 19 players on the varsity team are underclassmen, which has not been a problem this season considering their 6-2 league record.

“While our team is young, we have wonderful seniors and juniors leading the way out on the field,” Creznic said. “If our team steps out on the field focused and hungry to score, I believe we can beat any team in playoffs.”

Captains Kristen Lee ’12 and Brigid Sofen ’12 have been pivotal in the team’s success, each scoring eight goals over the course of the regular season.

Last year’s team lost in the semifinal round to Newport Harbor when Newport scored the only goal of the game as time expired in overtime.
