Launching the season with a tournament at Walt Disney World, Florida, amid some weather uncertainty, the varsity girlsâ field hockey team defeated Woonsocket School 6-2 last Thursday for their second straight win. The game was threatened by inclement weather from Hurricane Ernesto, but the skies cleared in time to make play possible.
Jamie Glushon â07 scored four goals, and goalie Rachel Horwitz â07 blocked two strokes.
After being ousted in the semifinals of the CIF tournament last year, the team lost seven graduating seniors, and assistant coach Erin Creznic stepped in as head coach to replace Gino Grajeda.
âI think our team will be just as good, maybe even better, than last yearâs,â Hannah Dean â07 said.
âWe have a lot of young talent, and the best coach we could have possibly had.â
In the first game of the tournament, the Wolverines defeated New Bedford 3-0. They completed the tournament last weekend, but the results were unavailable at press time.
One potentially exciting match-up for the team and school is on Sept. 22, when the Wolverines will be visited by the MLC school from Australia.
Four days later, they play Marina High at Moorpark College, a rematch of last yearâs CIF tournament semifinal game.
