Field hockey beats Westminster 5-0

The field hockey team beat Westminster 5-0 in an away game today.

Captain Mia Reilly ’18 opened the scoring for the Wolverines with two early goals.

“I was able to get the first two goals in off of great assists from my teammates and the goals were within two minutes [of each other],” Reilly said. “After that their defense kind of broke down and we were able to score three more easy goals.”

Reilly’s first goal was about 15 minutes into the game and her second followed shortly after.  Captain Alyse Tran ’18, Sydney Pizer ’19 and Alex Mieszala ’20 scored the last three goals.

Cypress Toomey ’19 had two assists and Astor Wu ’20 and Tran each had an assist.

“We struggled a little in the beginning with staying composed but in the second half we were really connecting our passes and staying aggressive in the circle,” Tran said. “We definitely played more as a unit this game compared to our game against Edison last week.”

The Westminster field is grass, rather than the turf that the Wolverines usually practice on. This presented unique challenges during the game, according to the players.

“The ball bounces a lot more on grass and gets stuck in small dips on the field all the time, so it is much harder to receive passes and dribble,” Reilly said.

Reilly estimates that about half of all fields that the team plays are grass and the others are turf.

The team plays Marina High School at home on Saturday.

“I’m feeling really confident about our game against Marina because so far it looks like we are improving and staying really focused,” Tran said.
