After starting the year winning nine of its first 11 games, the varsity girlsâ field hockey team is in the midst of a difficult stretch in their schedule, going 1-3-1 in the last five games.
“The last five games have been tough,” Head Coach Erin Creznic said.
“Two weeks ago we had four games in one week, which would have been difficult for any team. Although we lost a few games, the girls have been playing better as a team. I have no doubt that we will be in good shape [at] the end.”
Just before the concentrated stretch, confidence was soaring when the girls shut out MLC, a team visiting from Australia, 5-0, and then defeated Marina 4-1 in a rematch of last seasonâs CIF tournament semifinal game.
With the start of the second half of the season, however, they encountered their first turbulence.
The team dropped the next two games, both by a 0-2 margin, to Huntington Beach and Archbishop Mitty High School. Then, against Bishopâs School, the Wolverines were trailing for the majority of the game, but Brenna Moeljadi â07 bailed them out, and the girls pulled out a tie.
When Bishop struck first midway through the first half, Moeljadi tied the score with a long distance goal. Then, after Bishop took a 2-1 lead, Moeljadi fired successfully again to secure the two-all tie.
“Every year we have outstanding talent among our senior players,” Creznic said. “Having strong seniors challenges and encourages stronger play from our younger members.”
According to Katie MacDonald â08, the teamâs problem has been scoring.
In spite of the recent struggles, Moeljadi remains optimistic as well.
“I think we can finish winning CIF, and hopefully finish up winning league,” Moelajdi said. “Weâve done it before, so Iâm confident in the team that we can do it again.” The team faced Westminster yesterday, but the result was not available at press time.
