Field hockey to face Edison in finals after overtime win

One year after a controversial and heartbreaking loss to the Huntington Beach Oilers in the Los Angeles Field Hockey Association finals, the varsity field hockey team will try to write its storybook ending when it battles Edison for the 2013 championship at Moorpark College Nov. 2. The finals matchup was cemented last night following the Wolverines’ 1-0 overtime victory over Newport Harbor and Edison’s 4-1 win against Westminster.

A goal from center midfielder Glenne Carter ’14 in the final seconds of sudden death overtime Wednesday lifted the team past Newport Harbor 1-0 and into the championship game for the second straight year.

Fanatics as well as the varsity football team rushed the field and celebrated with the field hockey team after Carter ’14 netted the winning goal – and the only goal in the game with 10 seconds left in overtime.

Saturday’s game will be a rematch of last year’s semifinals, when Harvard-Westlake and Edison remained gridlocked until goaltender Daniela Grande ’15 saved four of five penalty shots to send the Wolverines into the finals.

The 2012 finals saw the Wolverines themselves fall in sudden death overtime to Huntington Beach 1-0, in a game where the Oilers received an unusually high 17 corners. The Wolverines conquered Huntington Beach in the 2013 regular season, defeating the Oilers 3-1 Sept. 10. Saturday, the team will look for redemption in the form of championship hardware.
