Field hockey wins last regular season game to become league champions

The field hockey team beat Chaminade 2-0, winning its 17th and final game in an undefeated season to become league champions.

This is the Wolverines’s second win against Chaminade after a 6-0 win earlier in season. Team captain Erin Lee ’18 attributes the closer win to the Eagles’ home field advantage.

“We played on their home field, which had shorter turf which made the ball speed a little faster than what it would have been on our home field,” Lee said.

Lee also cited extreme heat and high pressure on Chaminade as contributing factors to the Wolverine win. A win against the Wolverines would have placed Chaminade in the third seed going into the playoffs, while a loss meant a fourth place seeding. The Wolverines had secured the first seed regardless of the game’s outcome.

Lee also mentions tension with Chaminade over former Chaminade player and current Wolverine Rachel Brown ’20 as affecting the Eagles’ mentality in game.

“[Brown] used to play for Chaminade, but ever since she applied to and played for [the Wolverines] there’s been feeling of betrayal, rivalry and jealousy,” Lee said. “[Brown] is friends with a lot of Chaminade [players] so it’s tough for them to lose to her, especially since she is so good.”

The game’s two goals were scored by team captain Mia Reilly ’18 and Nicole Bahar ’18.

The Wolverines play their first playoff game against Fountain Valley, a team they beat 5-0 earlier in season, on Tuesday.
