Football falls in 2nd round of playoffs

After a blowout win against Torrance in the first round of CIF-Southern Section playoffs, varsity football suffered a 20-3 loss in the second round to Oak Park High School to end their season.
The Wolverines finished 8-4 on the year with a young team and almost mirrored the playoff success of last year’s team.

The team failed to repeat a Mission League title from last year.

“This was a good year,” quarterback Sean Berman ’09 said. “Of course whenever you don’t come away with a championship it leaves you feeling somewhat disappointed, but when I look back on the season, we accomplished a lot together as a team.”

The Wolverines went into the Oak Park game confident coming off of a 42-16 victory over the highly favored Torrance Tartars.

Despite entering the game as an underdog, Terhon O’Neal ’09 rushed for 110 yards on 14 carries and Paul Royster ’08 ran for four touchdowns to power the Wolverine offense.

The confidence gleaned from the Torrance game lasted through the first six minutes of the first quarter of the Oak Park game, as Brian Hentschel ’10 kicked a short field goal to open up scoring.
Oak Park answered back with a touchdown run by Kyle Shorten to pull ahead. It was all downhill from there.

Next year, the young team will have one more year of experience under its belt. The 13 returning starters next season will work on improving themselves in the off-season.

“We left ourselves room to improve and that’s what this off-season will be all about,” Berman said.
“While a 8-4 season is something to be proud of, I know we can do better, and I’m ready to get back at it and prepare as best we can for next season.”
