Continuing with their two-game winning streak, the Wolverines beat Salesian 49-25 last night.

Within the first 15 seconds of the game, running back Sultan Daniels ’19 ran 65 yards for the first Wolverine touchdown.

“Throughout the season we’ve been known for mediocre starts,” Daniels said. “In the locker room before the game Coach Burnett challenged us to impose our will on our opponent the second we stepped onto the field. That first touchdown proved to everyone that we can play at full intensity in the first half.”

During their next possession, the Wolverines inched towards to goal line. At the fourth down, wide receiver Brendan Kang ’20 connected on a passing play from quarterback Jameson Wang ’20. Closing in on the end zone, Wang threw a complete pass to tight end Garnett March ’19.

Kicking off the second quarter, Daniels ran six yards for his second touchdown of the game. Continuing with the Wolverine momentum, the ball was fumbled by the Mustangs and picked up by defensive back Donovan Econn ’19 and ran in for the third touchdown of the game.

The defensive line remained strong, not allowing many complete passes for the Mustangs and forcing unproductive possessions.

After three carries by Kang, Wang faked a hand-off, leaving Kang wide open for a 26 yard reception and first down. Several Mustang penalties propelled the Wolverines to the two-yard line. Wang found wide receiver Terrell Long ’21 to push the score to 35-0.

With 17 seconds left in the first half, Mustangs quarterback ran 10 yards to secure their first touchdown.

Early in the third quarter, Kang had a strip sack, placing the Wolverines 9 yards from the endzone. With the aid of the offensive line, Daniels ran for his third touchdown of the game. Linebacker Will Goldberg ’19 noted Kang’s importance in last night’s game.

“We’ve had some really devastating injuries in Jake Kelly and Loyal Terry, so lots of people have had to step up,” Goldberg said. “Specifically Brendan Kang has stepped up in a huge way in filling the running back role very nicely. He has also helped out with depth at defensive line.”

Throughout the game, the offensive line cleared big holes for running backs and kept their quarterback safe never allowing Wang to be sacked.

“The offensive line is very well polished,” Kang said. “They make great blocks which helps open up the running game so Sultan Daniels and I have great lanes.”

The Mustangs had a pass and run of 54 yards for a touchdown but the extra-point incomplete coming up short on the goal post. During the fourth quarter the Mustangs scored twice but failed to complete the two-point conversion both times.

Toward the end of the game, Kang secured two first downs on two runs. On the fourth down, Wang rushed 18 yards for the last touchdown of the game.

Kicker Charlie Mendes ’19 and kicker Liam Weetman ’21 kicked a perfect seven for seven on extra-points.

The Wolverines’ next game will be against St. Francis at Harvard-Westlake next Friday, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.

“Obviously, the last few years have been difficult against St. Francis, but we are going to focus on ourselves and getting better every week,” Head Coach Michael Burnett said. “So this week we are going to take the game one possession at a time and compete on every snap.”
