Freshman jumps second highest mark in the country

By Luke Holthouse

Alex Florent ’15 jumped nearly six feet in the high jump event at the LA County Championships April 14. Her jump of 5 feet 10 inches set a school record and was the second-highest jump recorded in girls’ high school track and field in the entire country this year.

In her first year at Harvard-Westlake, Florent has already broken the school record twice. She leapt 5 feet 6 inches to break the school record on March 1 during a meet against Alemany before breaking her own record again April 14.
Florent’s mark  is only 12 inches behind the current women’s world record set by Bulgarian Olympic Gold Medalist Stefka Kostadinova. Kostadinova set the record of 6 feet 10 inches in 1987 at the World Championships in Rome.
