Girls’ basketball beats Chaminade to win league

Girls’ basketball beat Chaminade today 54-48 to win the Mission League, marking their 22nd win of the season.

Guard Ashlee Wong ’18 said she is pleased to win league.

“It feels really good knowing that we are going into playoffs with momentum,” Wong said. “It was one of our goals this year, and we are so excited to achieve such an honor.”

The team is currently 22-4 overall with an undefeated record of 8-0 in league. After the double overtime win against Alemany on Tuesday, the team won a share of the Mission League title, but had to win tonight to be the only league champion. Earlier in the season, the girls beat Chaminade 69-52.

Starter Jayla Ruffus-Milner ’18 was out due to injury.

The team jumped out of the gate strong going up 14-7 after the first quarter but the game was tied 36-36 by the end of the third quarter. Wong said that she was happy with the way the team played, even though they struggled for a part of the game.

“We started the game pretty strong but had a really rough second quarter,” Wong said. “We were able to bounce back in the second half, being more aggressive to the rim and finishing our free throws.”

Wing Melanie Hirsch ’18 said that she was proud of the win.

“It was a rough first half, but what made us win was our grit and refusal to lose,” Hirsch said. “It wasn’t the prettiest game, but we gutted it out, which we haven’t been able to do in previous seasons.”

The Wolverines will now compete in the Open Division of the CIF Playoffs and are scheduled to play on Feb. 15, but their opponent is yet to be determined.
