By Alex Edel

After a 72-29 victory over Kingsburg High School, the girls’ basketball team will advance to the state quarterfinals on Thursday.

The team started out strong scoring 26 points in the first quarter and letting Kingsburg score only one three point shot. Sydney Haydel ’10 started the game out strong, getting fouled on during the first possession and making the two free point shots.

Throughout the game, entire team had a chance to play and almost everyone scored. Nicole Nesbit ’10 and Haydel led the team with 12 points each. Nicole Hung ’10, followed with 11 points.

The third quarter proved to be the hardest for the wolverines’ defense; Kingsburg scored thirteen points, while Harvard-Westlake only scored eighteen.

“We really need to work on our defense; we need to box out more. Defense is going to be the key in going far in State,” Nesbit said.

On Thursday, the team will be playing the winner of tonight’s game between Notre Dame High School and Mater Dei Catholic High School in the State quarterfinals.

“They are both really good. We already know that Notre Dame is good cause we played them in league,” Amanda Horowitz ’10 said. The girls’ beat Notre Dame once and lost to them once during the regular season.

“We need to focus on our defense and rebounding for Thursday. WE also need to play with more intensity,” Nicole Hung ’10 said.
