Girls’ basketball drops second home game

After winning both the Palisades Beach Invitational and the Redondo Union High School Tournament, the Harvard Westlake varsity girls’ basketball team returned home to defeat El Camino Real High School 54-46 Dec. 7.

This victory against El Camino Real gave the Wolverines a ninth consecutive win of the season and a spot as the top ranked team in the state of California.

However, the squad dropped their second home game of the season to Ventura High School by a score of 44-41.

Even though they lost, the players still remain positive that they can advance deep into the playoffs.

“This season we are hoping to win league and come home with a championship,”

guard Ashlee Wong ’18 said. “We also hope to make it to open division for CIF and state, and I know if we continue to work hard as a team, we can win both.”

The team attributes their 9-1 start to the season to strong playing, particularly on defense.

“Our team’s strength is definitely our defense. We know how to move as a unit and anticipate what the offense is going to do,” Wong said. “I also think we are and extremely [selfless] team, which [contributes] to our team dynamic positively.”

The squad will participate in the Title IX tournament in Washington D.C. beginning Dec. 28 and play the next home and first league game against Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy Jan. 5.
