Girls’ basketball notches fifth league win

Guard Ashlee Wong '18 attempts to score against Flintridge Sacred Heart.

Girls basketball beat Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy today 64-33, marking their 18th win of the season.

Starter Jayla Ruffus-Milner ’18 was out today due to injury and forward Genesis Aire ’19 didn’t play due to illness. Guard Ella Price ’20 said that the team missed them during the game.

“It’s never good to have players sitting out,” Price said. “They really contribute each game on the court but they were able to support us from the sideline tonight.”

The team jumped out of the gate strong going up 26-0 in the first quarter and leading 36-16 at halftime. The team is now 2-0 against Flintridge this season winning each game by more than 30 points. Guard Ashlee Wong ’18 said she was pleased with the team’s performance.

“We came out with a lot of intensity on offense, going 4-4 in our first possessions,” Wong said. “I think our pressure defense in our zone was effective as well. People shared the ball well and everyone contributed.”

Guard Kimiko Katzaroff ’21 finished with 11 points and wing Melanie Hirsch ’18 finished 13 points, 10 in the first quarter. Center Kiki Iriafen ’21 said that she was satisfied with the team’s ability to share the ball.

“We did a great job at not being selfish with the ball,” Iriafen said. “Everyone was able to score tonight and we ran our offensive sets really well.”

The Wolverines are now 5-0 in the Mission League and will play Marymount on Tuesday. Wong said that the team needs to prepare in order to be ready for the remainder of their league games.

“We just need to take each game one at a time,” Wong said. “Understanding our opponent’s game plan is important, but we have to focus on what we are going to do to win. To do that, we have to start reading the defense on offense rather than looking at teammates. On defense, we have to work on boxing out and staying in front of our man.”
