The girls’ basketball team defeated Clovis North High School 50-35 at home Dec. 7 in their final game of the Brentwood Invitational and were crowned tournament champions.

Previous Games

The squad played three games and were undefeated in the tournament prior to the championship. They defeated Leuzinger High School Dec. 2 65-39, La Canada High School 75-31 Dec. 4 and Crescenta Valley High School 62-35 Dec. 6.

The Game

The Wolverines had a slow start to the game and found themselves down 16-10 at the end of the first quarter. However, the team rallied, holding the Broncos to only four points in the second quarter and led 23-20 at halftime. The girls maintained this lead in the third quarter and finished the quarter up 37-31.

The squad managed to finally pull away in the final quarter and held the Broncos again to four points in the fourth quarter, winning the game 50-35. Forward Kiki Iriafen ‘21 finished with 26 points and 19 rebounds for the Wolverines. With this win, the Wolverines were crowned Brentwood Invitational champions.

Guard Kimiko Katzaroff ’21 credits the squad’s success in the championship of the Brentwood Invitational to controlling the game in the second half.

“We knew we were about to play some good competition before hand but we came in prepared,” Katzaroff said. “Although we started out slow in the first half, we realized that we needed to play our game and not let them dictate how we play, ultimately letting us step up in the second half.”

The Future

The squad will play in the Sandra Meadows Tournament in Texas from Dec. 26 to Dec. 28 and the Desert Heat Classic Jan. 2 to Jan. 4. Their first league game will be at home against Notre Dame Academy Jan. 7.
