Girls’ golf takes care of business in league opener

In the opening match of the varsity girls’ golf team’s 2014 season, the squad easily handled Mission League foe Marymount by a score of 226-275 on the difficult Rancho Park golf course.

Highly-touted freshman Karina Gou ’18 didn’t disappoint in her Wolverine debut, putting up the team’s best score with 41 shots needed over nine holes. The team’s depth was on display as well, as they finished the Rancho Park course in 19 shots fewer than the 2013 varsity team (which needed 245 shots in last season’s win over Marymount).

Still, Program Head Marge Chamberlain wasn’t entirely satisfied with her girls’ performance, saying, “Our girls did not putt as well as they had wanted.  Rancho is a tough test early in the season. Our team is young and we have a lot of opportunity  to improve.”

The team, now 1-0 overall and in league play, gets to go to its home park, the Encino Golf Course, for its next matchup. They will face off against Oaks Christian (who is 0-1 following a 2-stroke loss to the Wolverines’ main league rival, Notre Dame) at 3:15 p.m. on Sept. 9.
