Girls relay takes first at New Balance Nationals

    By Judd Liebman

Four track stars need to update their resumes and add “National
Champions” after Friday night’s victory in Greensboro, North Carolina. In a
time of 3:55.12, Cami Chapus ’12, Lauren Hansson ’11, Hilary King ’11
and Amy Weissenbach ’12 won the sprint medley
    relay at New Balance Nationals.

The sprint medley is 1600-meter race, run by four people, two
    200-meter runners, a 400-meter runner and a 800-meter runner as the
    anchor.

Hansson started in blocks and handed the baton off to King after
jumping out to the middle of the pack in her 200-meters. King maintained
position and gave Chapus the baton in fourth place after 400-meters of
the race. Chapus, state and national champion
in the 1600-meter race, ran the 400-meter leg of the race. Although she
lost position on the back stretch, she kicked hard and handed
Weissenbach the baton in third place after her 57 second leg. It was up
to Weissenbach’s 800 meter leg to bring the Wolverines
the title. The state champion took the lead halfway through her leg and
ran a 2:05 split to finish the race.

The girls combined for a 3:55.12, a school record. Their time ranks
14th in national high school history. On Saturday, the girls run the distance medley relay and possibly the 4×400-meter relay. The distance medley relay, which is comprised of a 1200-meter leg, a 400-meter leg, an 800-meter leg and a 1600-meter leg, will be run by Weissenbach, KC Cord ’11, Hansson and Chapus.
