Girls’ volleyball charges forward with new coach

After finishing last season with an overall record of 26-5, the girls’ varsity volleyball team hopes to repeat the same success this season. Under the guidance of new Head Coach Adam Black, the team has age and experience on its side this year.

“We have an older team this year,” middle blocker Cathryn Quinn ’08 said. “I’m one of 10 seniors.”

The many seniors on varsity are accompanied by four juniors and one sophomore. Quinn and KC Kanoff ’08 are the only seniors to have been on varsity all four years of high school.

As of press time, Black had not yet picked captains and said that everyone as competing for top spots.Last year’s squad finished with nine wins and one loss in the Mission League and qualified for CIF. The team made it as far as the CIF semifinals, where it lost to Marymount High School. The team  has a scrimmage today against Thousand Oaks High School.

“It’s going to be a good test to see where we are as a team,” Black said.

Black is replacing former Head Coach Jesse Quiroz, who resigned last year.

Black comes to the team after  coaching the men’s volleyball team at Pepperdine University.
Other than the obvious age difference between high school and college, Black does not believe coaching here will be too different from his past experiences.

“There is a gradual improvement in the team’s performance,” he said. “I expect the team to give their best effort at becoming the best that they can become.  Past teams’ success is not a priority of mine.”

“I think he’s definitely going to add to our chemistry,” Quinn said.

The team started practicing at the beginning of August in Taper Gym. Starting last week, the team began practice at 7 a.m.

“It’s kind of intense, but we’ve been competing really well against each other in practice,” Quinn said.
