Girls’ volleyball tops defending champion Marymount in four sets

Following the girls’ volleyball team’s loss last week against Santa Barbara, the Wolverines defended their home court tonight as they defeated the reigning CIF Division I State Champion Marymount team 3-1.

The Wolverines came out of the gate strong, defeating the Sailors in the first two sets by scores of 25-11 and 25-20. The squad’s wins in the first two sets can be credited to the strong front line of Mia Natsis ’14, Josephine Kremer ’14, and Arielle Strom ’14, who all had key smashes that stopped the Sailors from putting points on the board. The serving from the Wolverines was very effective, as Mila Barzdukas ’15 and Zoe Baxter ’16 build comfortable leads throughout both sets via serving aces.

The Sailors came out with intensity in the third set, defeating Harvard-Westlake 17-25. The Wolverines were initially down by 12, but they were able to make a short-lived comeback after four saves by starting setter Nicole Elattrache ’14 and starting libero Marielle Bagnard ’14.

After going into the fourth set with a lead in the match of 2-1, the squad was able to upset the defending champs in a very close fourth set. Although the score was tied for most of the set, the Wolverines were able to pull away at the end and secure a 25-19 win. The crowd’s presence was surely felt throughout the fourth set, as the Harvard-Westlake fans stormed the court after match point.
