Goalie to play Division I soccer

By Luke Holthouse

Goalkeeper Wade Clement ’12 has committed to play soccer at Duke University. Clement was one of two goalies on last year’s Wolverine team that went 9-12-5 (nine wins, twelve losses and five ties) and qualified for CIF playoffs.

Duke finished as the 26th ranked team in Division I last year with a 10-6-4 record. Duke advanced to the second round of the NCAA National Championship tournament.

This year, Duke is off to a 3-4-0 start. They have since dropped from the top 25 rankings but began the season ranked 23rd in the country.

Clement was also looking at Tufts and Northwestern, but after visiting Duke’s campus and meeting with coaches & players last weekend Clement decided he wanted to become a Blue Devil.

“It’s a really good school for soccer,” Clement said, “[It’s a] great combination of academics and athletics, which was what I was looking for.”

Clement became the full-time starter in goal for the Wolverines during the second half of last season after teammate Wiley Webb ’12 was injured with a broken wrist. It is unclear how playing time will be distributed between the two this season, but Clement said he would be interested in possibly playing a field position.
