The boysâ varsity golf team jumped to a 6-1 record , including an undefeated record and first place position in league play following two wins against Notre Dame and one win each against St. Francis and league rival Loyola.
âWe have excellent players with a lot of tournament experience,â Coach Scott Wood said. âThey have performed well all year long.â
After several successful showings in tournaments this year the team has only lost to San Marcos, a non-league opponent.
The team looks to finish undefeated in league for the first time in three years. The team has been led by captain Eli Cole â08 along with solid performances by Glen Scher â09, Jeff Wibawa â10, Bobby Lange â09 and Justin Kim â09, Wood said.
Tomorrow the squad tees off against Crespi at the Balboa Golf Course. The match marks the last of three scheduled games in the past four days, after a match scheduled against Brentwood two days ago was cancelled. as well as the penultimate league game before Mission League finals.
Yesterday, they faced Loyola for a rematch after a 193-200 Harvard-Westlake victory last week; however, the results were unavailable as of press time.
Last year, the team reached the Mission League final and went on to a fourth place finish in CIF. With almost all the golfers returning this year and increasing momentum from their first place ranking, Wood, along with the team, looks to repeat.
This year, they are in a tight race with Loyola for the Mission League title, but Wood is confident that if they continue playing the way they have, they will see their way to a repeat performance.
âHopefully, finals will play out the way the teams have finished all year,â Wood said. âBut in golf you never know.”
