Students sold homemade goods including jewelry, ceramics, glass cups and baked goods at the first-ever Winter Market on the quad throughout the day Dec. 2.

Prefect Council hosts inaugural Winter Market

Members of Prefect Council organized the Winter Market to increase community engagement by providing opportunities for students on campus to show off their interests, Head Prefect Michael Lehrhoff ’20 said. Students who sold items were able to keep the profits they made. All transactions were made through Venmo, a mobile payment service.

“We found that at Harvard-Westlake, students have such a large range of hobbies, so we tried to find a way for them to express themselves through their crafts,” Lehrhoff said. “I loved how students received such positive encouragement for expressing themselves and sharing their interests with the school community.”

Grace Shin ’21, who sold crocheted hats, banana bread and pumpkin bread, said the Winter Market allowed her to interact with students around campus and display her handmade goods.

“I think the Winter Market was a really good idea because it encourages entrepreneurship, and it was a space where you can sell anything no matter what kind of experience you have,” Shin said. “I had a lot of fun because it was nice to show off something unique that I do outside of school that not everyone may know about, but that I enjoy doing.”

Khyra Stiner ’21 said she enjoyed walking through the Winter Market because she learned more about the hobbies and extracurricular interests of other students within the school community.

“I think the Winter Market was a good idea, as the students were able to show off their work and had the opportunity to support their friends and fellow students,” Stiner said. “Before the Winter Market, I had no idea about all of the unique projects and skills of the other students on our campus, and I just think the Winter Market was a great way for students to get a chance to showcase their skills and possibly make an earning from it.”
