The school bestowed outgoing Head of School Jeanne Huybrechts an honorary diploma at the commencement ceremony on Friday, which marked a first in Harvard-Westlake history.

The Class of 2017 received their diplomas after listening to speeches from their salutatorian and valedictorian.

Salutatorian Joe Levin ’17 said humor is what carried him through the challenges of high school.

Valedictorian Brendan Rose ’17 emphasized the importance of effort over success by explaining the origins of the school moto, possunt quia posse videntur, in Vergil’s Aeneid.

President Rick Commons presented Chronicle Presentation Editor Sabrina de Brito ’17 with the Veritas Award and Quinton Simmonds ’17 with the Bishops Award for their contributions to the school community.
